A VILA ROMANA DE GEAMANA, INUNDADA POR UM LAGO TÓXICO - ROMÉNIA
Exploração de cobre nas minas de Rosia Poieni nas Montanhas Apuseni, no distrito de Alba, na Roménia, era como uma maldição para os moradores das aldeias gêmeas situadas no sopé onde escavações foram realizadas. O seu calvário começou em 1977, quando o ditador comunista Nicolae Ceausescu da Roménia decidiu explorar a enorme jazida de cobre descoberto no subsolo. O governo obrigou os habitantes da aldeia vizinha de Geamana a deixar suas casas e abandonar seu modo de vida, a fim de abrir caminho para o lixo tóxico de Roşia Poieni pit mineração. Cerca de 400 famílias foram evacuadas e sua aldeia substituído por um lago artificial que servia como uma espécie de pega-bacia para as lamas contaminadas da mina a fluir para dentro. As águas do lago é altamente tóxico com cianureto e outros produtos químicos. Como o lago cresceu, tomou conta que já foi uma vila bonita. A torre da igreja e algumas casas são tudo o que permanece até hoje.

Geamana, The Romanian Village Flooded by a Toxic Lake

Copper exploitation at the mines of Rosia Poieni in the Apuseni Mountains, in Alba county, in Romania, was like a curse for residents of the twin villages situated in the foothills where excavations were carried out. Their ordeal began in 1977, when Romania’s communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu decided to exploit the huge copper deposit discovered underground. The government forced the inhabitants of the nearby village of Geamana to leave their homes and abandon their way of life in order to make way for the toxic waste from Roşia Poieni mining pit. Around 400 families were evacuated and their village replaced by an artificial lake that served as a kind of catch-basin for the mine’s contaminated sludge to flow into. The waters of the lake is highly toxic laced with cyanide and other chemicals. As the lake grew, it engulfed what was once a beautiful village. The tower of the church and a few houses are all that remains today.
